What is Folacin? What is folic acid? What is folate?

Folacin, also known as folate or folic acid, works closely with Vitamin B12 to help the body metabolize amino acids and synthesize protein and form DNA and RNA genetic material. It is vital to healthy cell division and replication and to tissue growth.

Folacin Food Sources:
Liver (from beef, pork, chicken or lamb)
Deep green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach, kale and beet greens)
Asparagus
Broccoli
Whole wheat

It is estimated that only 25 to 50 % of folic acid found in food naturally can be used biologically. Also note that cooking and processing can destroy 50-90% of the folate content of fresh foods.
